# What is frame rate?

By Nikhil Barik · Published November 3, 2026

## Quick answer

Frame rate is the number of still pictures a video shows each second, written as fps. Film is usually 24 fps, and common video rates are 30 and 60 fps.

## What it is

Higher rates look smoother and show motion more clearly, but use more data. GIFs often use low rates to stay small.

## Why it matters on a Mac

Mixing clips with different frame rates in one project can cause stutter. Screen recordings and phone videos often differ.

## How to check it on macOS

In QuickTime Player, choose Window > Show Movie Inspector. Media Info in Toolbox shows the frame rate of each video track.

## How Toolbox handles it

Video to GIF lets you choose 10, 15 or 24 fps. Extract Frames saves still images from a video at set intervals, a number of evenly spaced frames, or a single chosen time.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does a higher frame rate mean better quality?**

It means smoother motion. Sharpness depends on resolution.

**What frame rate should a GIF use?**

10 to 15 fps keeps files small. 24 fps is smoother.

**Can I turn 30 fps into 60 fps?**

You can duplicate frames, but it does not add real detail.
