# What is System Data on Mac?

By Nikhil Barik · Published November 3, 2026

## Quick answer

System Data is the part of Mac storage that does not fit the other categories. It often holds caches, developer files, iPhone backups and Time Machine local snapshots.

## What it is

In macOS storage, items are grouped as Applications, Documents, Photos and so on. Whatever cannot be sorted into a named group is shown as System Data.

## Why it matters on a Mac

It can grow to tens of gigabytes without you noticing, and it is hard to inspect from the Storage screen alone.

## How to check it on macOS

Open System Settings > General > Storage and wait for the bars to finish loading. Click the info button beside a category for more detail.

## How Toolbox handles it

Storage Explorer scans your home folder, startup disk or any folder and shows the largest items. Its Space Hogs view checks Xcode caches, iOS simulators, iPhone backups, app caches and old Downloads. Anything you remove goes to the Trash first.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is it safe to delete System Data?**

Do not delete system folders by hand. Review specific items such as caches and old backups, and move them to the Trash so you can undo it.

**Why is System Data so large?**

Common causes are caches, iPhone backups, developer files and local snapshots.

**Do caches come back?**

Yes. Apps rebuild caches as they need them.
