New in Toolbox 1.1

Chat with a PDF on your Mac, offline

Ask a Document reads a PDF, Word, RTF, Markdown, HTML or text file and answers your questions from it, with page references you can click to see the passage behind each answer. It uses Apple Intelligence on your Mac, so contracts, statements and reports never go to a chatbot's server. This tool needs macOS 26 (Tahoe) on a Mac that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on.

Questions about Ask a Document

Is it free, and does it upload my document?

Toolbox is a paid app, and one purchase includes every tool, with no subscription or account. There's no per-question fee either. Ask a Document picks the passages that match your question and has Apple's on-device model answer from them, so the document and your questions stay on your Mac.

What do I need to use Ask a Document?

macOS 26 (Tahoe) on a Mac that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on in System Settings. Without it you can still search the document with Find in Document.

Does it read the whole document for every answer?

No. The on-device model can only take in part of a long document at a time, so Toolbox picks the passages that best match each question and answers from those, citing their pages. Specific questions get the best answers.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. If a PDF has pages without selectable text, click Recognize Scanned Pages and Toolbox reads them with on-device text recognition. A password-protected PDF needs its password removed first.
