How to convert a video to a GIF on Mac
MarkdownThe built-in way
QuickTime Player and Finder do not export GIFs. The Shortcuts app can be set up to make a GIF, but that takes building a shortcut yourself, so for a one-off clip a dedicated tool is quicker.
The Toolbox way: Video to GIF
Video to GIF converts clips into animated GIFs for chats, docs and bug reports. Choose 10, 15 or 24 fps and a width of 320, 480 or 640 pixels or the original size, and decide whether the GIF loops forever.
- Open Video to GIF and drop one or more videos.
- Pick a frame rate and width, and choose whether to loop forever.
- Turn on Convert only part of each video and set the start and duration if you only want a section.
- Click Convert and find the GIFs in Downloads.
Tips and troubleshooting
- To make the GIF smaller, use a smaller width and a lower frame rate, and convert only the part you need. Videos are never enlarged.
- To make a GIF from a screen recording, record with Record Screen, then drop the file into Video to GIF.
- To cut the clip first, use Trim Video, which trims without re-encoding.
