How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac
MarkdownThe built-in ways: Preview and Finder
Preview works well for a few photos.
- Open the HEIC photo in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to JPEG and adjust the Quality slider.
- Choose a name and location, then click Save.
In Finder you can also select one or more images, right-click, choose Quick Actions, then Convert Image, and pick a format and size. That handles several photos in one step.
The Toolbox way: Convert Images
Convert Images saves photos as JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF or WebP. Drop in a whole folder, pick the format and quality, and the copies are written to a new folder. Conversion happens on your Mac, so nothing is uploaded.
- Open Convert Images and drop your HEIC or other photos.
- Choose the output format, such as JPEG.
- Set the quality and decide whether to keep metadata.
- Click Convert. The new files go to a dated folder in Downloads.
Which format should you pick?
| Format | Best for |
|---|---|
| JPEG | Sharing photos that need to open anywhere |
| PNG | Lossless images and images with transparency |
| TIFF | Printing and editing |
| HEIC | Small files on Apple devices |
| WebP | Small files for the web |
Tips and troubleshooting
- Converted photos keep their date and location only if Keep metadata is on. Turn it off to drop that information.
- Your original files are never changed.
- If you plan to share the photos publicly, turning metadata off removes the GPS location.
