Count words and characters on your Mac
Word Counter counts as you type or paste: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus unique words, average word length, size in bytes, and how long the text takes to read or say out loud. It uses Apple's language tools, so abbreviations like e.g. don't end a sentence, contractions count as one word, and Chinese and Japanese text is counted properly. Your most-used words are listed too, without filler words like the and and.

How to use Word Counter
Open Word Counter and type, paste, or drop a document.
Read the counts as you write. They update with every change.
Check Most used for words you repeat.
Click Copy Stats to copy the counts.
Questions about Word Counter
How do I count words on a Mac?
Paste your text into Word Counter in Toolbox, or drop a text or Markdown file onto it. The word count is at the top and updates as you type, next to the characters, sentences and reading time.
Does it count characters with and without spaces?
Yes, both, plus the size in bytes. Characters are counted the way you see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
How is reading time worked out?
At 238 words a minute, the average silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time uses 150 words a minute, a comfortable pace for a talk.
Is it free, and is my writing uploaded?
Toolbox is a paid app, and one purchase includes every tool, with no subscription or account. Text is counted on your Mac and never sent anywhere.
