How to record your screen with audio on Mac
MarkdownThe built-in way: Shift-Command-5
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the screenshot toolbar.
- Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion.
- Click Options and choose a microphone if you want to record your voice.
- Click Record, then click the stop button in the menu bar when you are done.
On most macOS versions the built-in recorder captures only a microphone, not the audio your Mac is playing. Apple lists an Include System Audio option in the Options menu for macOS 27 and later.
The Toolbox way: Record Screen
Record Screen captures a full display, a single window or an area you select, along with system audio and your microphone. It can show the pointer and highlight clicks, which helps for tutorials and bug reports. Recordings are saved as H.264 MOV or MP4 at Native, 1440p, 1080p or 720p resolution and 30 or 60 fps.
- Open Record Screen and allow screen recording in System Settings if asked.
- Choose Display, Window or Area, and pick what to record.
- Turn on System audio, Microphone, Show pointer or Highlight clicks, and set the resolution, frame rate and format.
- Click record, then stop when you are done. The file is saved to Downloads.
Tips and troubleshooting
- If recording is blocked, check Screen Recording for the app in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Reset Permissions can unstick an app that macOS no longer asks about.
- To shrink a long recording, use Compress Video.
- To share a short clip, turn it into a GIF with Video to GIF.
