MarkdownOur ranking
Four disk tools for finding and removing large files on a Mac.
| # | App | Best for | Price | Runs in / Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | DaisyDisk | Seeing where space went | $9.99 lifetime license, free version to try | macOS 10.13 or newer, Apple Silicon and Intel |
| 2 | Toolbox | Finding caches, Xcode files and old backups | From $19 one-time | Moves items to the Trash, never deletes directly |
| 3 | Disk Inventory X | Free treemap view | Free (GPL), donations welcome | Site lists macOS 10.13 to 10.15; may not run on newer macOS |
| 4 | CleanMyMac | All-in-one maintenance | Starting at $3.33/month (see their site for plans) | 7-day free trial, 30-day money back |
DaisyDisk
We rank it first for exploring, ahead of Toolbox.
- Pros: A polished visual map of your disk, cheap, and one-time. It is the app to beat for exploring space.
- Cons: Shows you the space but is not aimed at knowing what is safe to remove.
Toolbox
Toolbox is a Mac app with many tools in one, sold as a one-time purchase with no subscription.
- Pros: Storage Explorer scans home, startup disk or a folder, and the Space Hogs view checks Xcode caches, iOS simulators, iPhone backups, app caches and old Downloads. Removals go to the Trash.
- Cons: Less polished as a visual map than DaisyDisk, and paid.
Disk Inventory X
Fine if it works on your system.
- Pros: Free treemaps of files and folders.
- Cons: The version on its site lists support only up to macOS 10.15, so it may not run on a current Mac.
CleanMyMac
Only if you want one suite for general upkeep.
- Pros: Many cleanup and maintenance tasks in one app.
- Cons: Priced as a subscription-style plan, and broader than most people need.
How we chose
We looked at what each app does for this one job, what it costs, and where it runs. Prices and features were checked on each maker's own site on 2026-11-03 and can change. Where a price page did not show a figure we could confirm, the table says to see their site.
Toolbox is our own app, so treat our ranking with that in mind. We list it where it fits the job and say plainly when another app is the better pick. Toolbox needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later. We looked at whether an app shows or just deletes, whether deletions are reversible, and whether it runs on current macOS. Your Mac's built-in Storage settings are also worth a look before buying anything.

Yes. It is rebuilt the next time you build a project.
What is System Data on a Mac?
Space macOS cannot put in another category, often caches, developer files, iPhone backups and local snapshots.
Do these apps delete files permanently?
Toolbox moves items to the Trash. Check each other app's behavior before you confirm.
