Check MD5 and SHA-256 checksums on your Mac
Hash Generator computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 of text or files in a single pass. Files of any size are read in chunks, with progress and Cancel. Paste the checksum from a download page into Compare and Toolbox tells you which algorithm it matches, or that it doesn't match at all.

How to use Hash Generator
Open Hash Generator and choose Text or Files.
Type or paste text, or drop one or more files.
Copy any hash, or click Copy All. Turn on Uppercase if you need capital letters.
Paste an expected hash into Compare. It accepts shasum output, a sha256: prefix, capitals and hex split by spaces or colons.
Questions about Hash Generator
How do I check the SHA-256 checksum of a file on Mac?
Drop the file into Hash Generator and paste the published SHA-256 into Compare. Toolbox shows Matches SHA-256 when the two are the same. In Terminal, shasum -a 256 prints the hash too, but you have to compare it by eye.
Is MD5 still safe to use?
MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for spotting a corrupted or incomplete download, but not for passwords or signatures, because matching values can be forged. Use SHA-256 or longer when security matters.
Can it hash very large files?
Yes. Files are read 4 MB at a time, so even large disk images use little memory. You can cancel a batch and resume it later.
Is it free, and are my files uploaded?
Toolbox is a paid app, and one purchase includes every tool, with no subscription or account. Files are hashed on your Mac and are never changed or uploaded.
